Why Brakes Need Service

All automotive parts experience wear and tear. When it comes to brakes, wear and tear is actually in part how they work. That's because brakes are designed to use pressure and friction to reduce your vehicle's speed. It all starts with how much pressure you put on the brake pedal. That pushes brake fluid through the brake lines and out to your wheels.

When it arrives at your wheels, it flows to a set of calipers. These hover just above the rotors in your wheels. Once the brake fluid arrives, the calipers begin to close in and clamp down on the rotors. To slow down the rotors, brake pads are attached to the calipers. They're designed to create enough friction for your wheels to slow down.

Over time, this causes your brake pads to wear down. Some brake pads are designed to do just that. Your vehicle will also need new brake fluid from time to time. That's why brake service is part of your vehicle's routine maintenance schedule. 

Brake Service Warning Signs

While service technicians will look over your vehicle's brake system, how can you tell if your brakes need to be serviced? Fortunately, there are a few built-in warning signs. Schedule brake service if you notice any of the following warning signs:

• Squeaky Brakes - Chances are, you've heard squeaky brakes before. This infamous sound is actually your brake pads indicating that they need to be replaced.
• Sinking Brake Pedal - If you step on the brake pedal but it feels like you need to press it all the way down to the floor before your vehicle starts to slow down, it's most likely low on brake fluid.
• Drifting to the Side - If you find your car is consistently drifting to the same side when you brake, it likely means there's a problem in that brake line. There may be some air bubbles inside the brake line or there could be a hole and brake fluid is leaking.
• Grinding Metal Sound - When a rotor cracks or warps, you'll hear the sound of grinding metal every time you use the brakes.
• Dashboard Warning Light - There are a couple brake warning lights you should become familiar with. The ABS light comes on when there's a problem with your vehicle's anti-lock braking system. While this isn't serious, you should get it checked soon. The most serious warning is the BRAKE light. It comes one when your brakes are faulty. Do not continue driving if you see this light. Instead, call a tow truck.
