Design

The 2020 Land Rover Defender keeps the traditional square design that you've seen on previous generations but adds a more modern spin to it.

While it's immediately recognizable, it does have a slightly more streamlined look than its ancestors with a rounded windshield and curved front bumper. This gives it a sleek look that's bolstered by its alloy wheels.

It also shows off how capable it is with two large air intakes up from and one running vertically next to each one of the front doors.

Capability

The Land Rover Defender may be more refined and ready for driving around town than its predecessors, but it's still designed to conqueror tough terrain.

As with all Land Rover models, 4-wheel drive is standard. This SUV sits on a different suspension than previous generations though. The traditional solid axles have been replaced by a pair of independent suspensions.

These lighter and more versatile suspensions can give the Land Rover Defender extra ground clearance and make it even more capable when driving through water, over obstacles, and up steep hills.

It's sure to have an impressive approach and departure angle too with its compact front and rear overhangs.

Like other Land Rover and Range Rover models, it's also expected to let you adjust the drivetrain to match your conditions with Terrain Response®.

Powertrains

Under the hood, the 2020 Land Rover Defender is expected to offer a choice between several Ingenium engines. Each one is sure to be heavy on torque, so you can maintain traction and power on even the slickest ground.

It's likely that both a gas-powered and diesel-powered version of the turbocharged 2.0L 4-cylinder engines will be available, as well as a capable V6. There are even rumors of a plug-in electric hybrid powertrain.

Every engine will likely be paired with Land Rover's versatile 8-speed automatic transmission. In other Land Rover models, this transmission has been trusted to help with fuel economy and capability by delivering precise shifting and a wide range of gears.
